GENEVA, July 18 (KUNA) -- The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi on Wednesday praised Kuwait for continuous humanitarian solidarity with the commission, which has a great impact on alleviating the suffering of those affected by crises and disasters.
This came in a statement made by Grandi to KUNA after meeting with Permanent Representative of Kuwait to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Jamal Al-Ghunaim at the UNHCR headquarters.
"We are grateful to the leadership, government and people of Kuwait for their continued generosity toward the displaced, whether they are asylum seekers, refugees or internally displaced persons, and those in desperate need of support," Grandi said.
He noted that the meeting with Ambassador Al-Ghunaim dealt with the support of Kuwait for the Commission's programs for Yemen, as such timely support would enable UNHCR to lessen the suffering of the Yemeni people.
Grandi also pointed to the existence of more than two million displaced persons in Yemen, including 950,000 classified as internally displaced and approximately 280,000 registered refugees and asylum seekers, mostly from Somalia and Ethiopia. (end) ta.aa
