EU calls on Russia to take responsibility for downing of MH17

BRUSSELS, July 17 (KUNA) -- The European Union said Tuesday that the Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 that was shot down by the BUK installation belonged "beyond doubt" to the Russian armed forces.
"We will continue to call on the Russian Federation to accept its responsibility and to fully cooperate with all efforts to establish accountability," said EU High Representative Federica Mogherini in a statement to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the tragic downing of MH17 in which 298 people were killed.
"The EU fully supports United Nations Security Council Resolution 2166, which demands that those responsible for the downing of flight MH17 on 17 July 2014 be held to account and that all States cooperate fully with efforts to establish accountability," she added.
A Dutch-led Joint Investigation Team (JIT) concluded, after four years of investigations, that a Russian missile, BUK TELAR, shot down the jetliner.
JIT said it was convinced a BUK TELAR was used to down MH17, and that it originated from the 53rd Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade (53rd Brigade), which is a unit of the Russian Army from Kursk in the Russian Federation. (end) nk.bs
