Spain rescues immigration seekers at sea

MADRID, June 23 (KUNA) -- Spanish coast guards salvaged on Saturday 769 boats' boarding immigration seekers who attempted to reach Spanish coast illegally, the official Spanish television said.
The naval personnel saved 298 desperados close to Aboran Island, 342 others in Gibraltar waters and 129 off Gran Canaria island in the Atlantic.
The immigration seekers, including children, came from African countries and Morocco.
The coast guards have been engaged in the rescue mission since today's wee hours after they were tipped off about presence of many boats in Spain's territorial waters.
Such incidents have alarmingly increased recently, with desperate people from African nations trying to reach Europe for a better life. However, many boarding ragtag boats have lost their lives in the treacherous journeys. (end) hnd.rk
