Pompeo, Guterres discuss Singapore summit, Middle East peace at State Dept.

WASHINGTON, JUNE 23 (KUNA) -- U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, met Saturday with the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres days after the United States announced its withdrawal from the UN Human Rights Council.
Pompeo welcomed Guterres to the State Department in Washington, where they discussed the success of the recent US-North Korea summit in Singapore and efforts to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula, as well as the crisis in Libya, peace in the Middle East, and Guterres' recent trip to Mali. According to a read-out from the State Department, the two also agreed on the need to prioritize humanitarian aid to Yemen and Syria. The Secretary General's visit to Washington comes after the US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, announced the US would exit from the UN Human Rights Council over the what it perceives as anti-Israel bias.
The announcement came a day after the Human Rights Council chief strongly criticized the Trump administration's controversial policy of separating parents from their children caught illegally crossing into the US. (end) hy.rk
