Trump threatens 20 pct tariff on European auto imports

WASHINGTON, June 22 (KUNA) -- US President Donald Trump threatened to impose a 20 percent tariff on all automobile imports from Europe, according to a tweet he made on Friday.
"Based on the Tariffs and Trade Barriers long placed on the US and it great companies and workers by the European Union, if these Tariffs and Barriers are not soon broken down and removed, we will be placing a 20% Tariff on all of their cars coming into the U.S. Build them here!," he said.
The EU charges a 10 percent tariff on auto imports from the US but the president's threat would impose double that size if the EU doesn't remove its trade barriers.
On Wednesday, Europe announced that it approved tariffs on US exports worth USD 3.2 billion that would hit American products such as motorcycles, orange juice, bourbon, peanut butter, motor boats, cigarettes and denim. These were instituted in response to Trump's tariffs on European steel and aluminum exports. (end) ak.hm
