EU agrees on rules to achieve energy transition

BRUSSELS, June 20 (KUNA) -- The European Commission, the European Parliament and the EU member states Wednesday reached a political agreement on the governance of the EU's Energy Union.
With today's deal, the EU Member States will be equipped to govern the Energy Union; a project aimed at ensuring all Europeans have access to secure, affordable and climate-friendly energy, said a European Commission statement.
This new governance system will enable the EU to realise its goals of becoming world leader on renewable energy and set the best way to achieve the energy transition and the modernisation of the EU economy and industry.
This regulation will also ensure that the objectives of the Energy Union, especially the EU's 2030 energy and climate targets - reduction of 40 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, a minimum of 32 percent renewables in the EU energy mix and the 32.5 percent goal of energy efficiency savings - are achieved.
EU Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Canete commented, "After agreeing on renewable energy last week, and on energy efficiency yesterday, today's deal is another major delivery in our transition to clean energy." Meanwhile, the European Parliament's negotiators reached a final deal with the EU member states yesterday to secure a binding target of 32.5-percent improvement of energy efficiency by 2030.
