Over 70 dead in floods and landslides in India

New Delhi, June 17 (KUNA) -- At least 70 people were killed and hundreds of thousands were affected due to floods and landslides caused by incessant seasonal rains in south and north-eastern states of India.
According to local media on Sunday, Southern Indian state of Kerala was most affected as death toll since the beginning of seasonal rains two weeks back touched 53 people including 12 dead following a landslide yhat buried their houses in Kozhikode district of the state. The rescue and relief team is still searching for two more missed in the tragic incident. Floods also hit a number of India's north eastern states including Assam, Manipur, Tripura and Mizoram claiming at least 17 people in the region. Assam, the worst affected, is still reeling under the fury of nature as incessant rains lashed her even today claiming eight lives since the start of seasonal rains and affecting 425000 people. Torrential rain also caused flood-like situation in neighboring state of Manipur killing seven people and affecting the life of at least 180000 people. Most of the north eastern states remained cut off from the rest of the country as a number of landslides in various regions forced the authorities to suspend the train services. The central authorities have already dispatched rescue and relief teams to the affected states while the local authorities put in place hundreds of thousands of relief camps to shelter the affected people.(end) atk.ag
