35 PKK gunmen killed in Turkish air strikes in North Iraq

ISTANBUL, June 17 (KUNA) -- Turkish fighter jets have raided strongholds of the outlawed Workers Party of Kurdistan (the PKK) in North Iraq killing 35 gunmen, the Turkish Army said on Sunday.
The warplanes have been bombing PKK bases in the mountainous region, targeting ammunition depots and bases.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has indicated that some of the latest strikes targeted hideouts for senior PKK chiefs in Qandil.
The PKK of the imprisoned chief Abdullah Ocalan advocates establishing an independent Kurdish entity in southeastern Turkey.
The group, enlisted as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union, has bases in northern Iraq and Syria. (end) ta.rk
