1961 -- The Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah decreed, appointing Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah as chief the police and general security. He served in these posts till January 17, 1962. Later, he was named minister of interior in Kuwait's first cabinet.
1970 -- Up to 16 Kuwaiti troops from Al-Yarmouk Brigade martyred, fighting alongside Egyptian forces in the Suez Canal battle against Israeli occupation. A funeral procession for the Kuwaiti martyrs was held at Al-Tahrir Public Square in Cairo. They were later laid to rest at the Martyrs Cemetery in Al-Sulaibikhat, Kuwait.
1976 -- Blast at Al-Anbaa newspaper's building wounded five people including the chief editor.
1986 -- Four blasts ripped through oil installations in Al-Ahmadi triggering fires at the refinery and the oil fields but causing no injuries. A group called "the Arab Revolutionists' Organization" claimed responsibility for the explosions.
2000 -- Gas leak occurred at Al-Shuaiba oil refinery causing death of two Kuwaiti engineers, Mohammad Al-Kandari and Badr Al-Dyouli, and injuring two personnel.
2000 -- Al-Arabi Club was crowned champion of the Martyr Fahad Al-Ahmad Football Premier League, beating Al-Sahel 2-0.
2001 -- The Central Blood Bank earned an accreditation from an American blood organization.
2001 -- The American University in Cairo granted Kuwait University Rector, Dr. Fayza Al-Kharafi, an honorary PhD.
2013 -- Kuwaiti shooter Abdullah Al-Taraqi earned the gold medal in skeet in the world shooting tournament, held in Cyprus.
1990 -- The eminent Kuwaiti poet and writer, Ahmad Meshari Al-Adwani, passed away. He composed lyrics of Kuwait National Anthem. (end) rk
