US calls on Russia to end "senseless" violence in Syria

WASHINGTON, JUNE 14 (KUNA) -- The US on Thursday called on Russia to end the "senseless killing of civilians in Syria" following reports of a deadly airstrike in northwest Syria. "We've seen reports of 44 Syrians, including 6 children, killed in a Russian airstrike on Zardana. We stand with the Syrian people, victims of their government and its supporters, and call on Russia to end the senseless killing of civilians in Syria," State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a tweet. Russia has denied any involvement in the attack. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it occurred after sunset June 8 and is so far the deadliest in Idlib province this year.
Meanwhile, the UN has called for an inquiry into the attack on the rebel-held town, which is within a de-escalation zone agreed on last year by Russia, Turkey and Iran. (end) hy.msa
