Suicide attack kills policemen among 9 people in Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD, May 30 (KUNA) -- At least six policemen and three suicide bombers were killed on Wednesday when the militants detonated an explosives-laden vehicle in front of a police building in Afghanistan's central Logar province, said officials.
Provincial police spokesman, Shahpur Ahmadzai told media that the incident took place in the 1st police district of Pul-i-Alam city, the provincial capital in the early morning.
He said one of the bombers blew up the explosives-packed van at the entrance of the police facility, enabling two others to enter the station.
The security forces exchanged fire with the attackers, killing them outside the station. The official confirmed that six policemen, including the district police chief, were killed while four police personnel and eight civilians were wounded in the bombing.
The security forces cordoned off the area and the injured were shifted to the nearby hospitals.
According to local media, Taliban rebels claimed responsibility of the attack.
Earlier last week, at least 28 people were killed and many others wounded in series of attacks in Afghanistan's central Ghazni and southern Kandahar provinces. Taliban rebels have paced up their attacks in May across Afghanistan following the announcement of their summer offensive against the security forces. (end) sbk.tg
