BRUSSELS, May 28 (KUNA) -- Dozens of delegates at the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) gender council conference - from Asia to the Americas and Europe to the Middle East - have issued a global call for action to address the violence, poverty and discrimination faced by women worldwide.
The IFJ in a press release in Brussels Monday said that the conference held in Santander, Spain on 25 and 26 May, delegates condemned violence and harassment faced by women journalists across the world.
IFJ said statistics demonstrate at least 1 in every 2 journalists have suffered sexual harassment, psychological abuse, online trolling and other forms of human rights abuses.
The conference condemned discrimination, including political, legal, cultural, racial and social factors, faced by women journalists in their careers and communities which impoverish them.
The delegates demanded stronger laws on equal pay, pay transparency, equal rights, which must be comprehensive and resources made available to enable them to be fully enforced and implemented.
The conference was addressed by women journalists from Kuwait, Pakistan, Italy, UK, Spain and Peru among others, said the Brussels-based IFJ. (end)
