MUSCAT, May 25 (KUNA) -- The State of Kuwait diplomatic mission has set up an emergency operations room functioning round the clock to relieve any Kuwaiti citizen in distress due to the incoming dreaded cyclone Mekunu.
With gales roaring above 100 kilometers per hour, giant waves crashing on southern shores and torrential rain flooding residential districts across the nation, the State of Kuwait mission renewed the call on the citizens to take utmost precautions and call the embassy for any help.
The charge d'affaires, Fahad Al-Ajmi, said in a statement that the mission is monitoring the extraordinary weather conditions closely -- particularly in Dhofar, Al-Wusta and Salalah.
The mission has contacted the Kuwaiti nationals in these regions, asking them to take maximum precautions for their safety.
Al-Ajmi added that the embassy has formed an emergency room, operating round the clock, to respond to any calls for help by the Kuwaitis in the Sultanate.
The embassy is reachable on the phone numbers: 0096824699626, 0096824696095, 0096824696097 and 0096892870055.
It had already cautioned the Kuwaitis in the Sultanate, after the cyclone ravaged through the Yemeni island of Socotra where at least 40 people were reported "missing," residential districts were flooded and several ships smashed into pieces with tall sea waves whipping the shores.
Earlier, the Omani authorities announced that 10,000 people had been evacuated from sea-side areas and low lands to safer and higher locations, as the storm picked up speed and strength. (pickup previous) ma.rk
