Tropical Cyclone Mekunu threatening Oman upgraded to category 2

MUSCAT, May 25 (KUNA) -- The latest weather charts and satellite imageries said Friday that that tropical Cyclone Mekunu, around 200 km away from Salalah City, was upgraded to category 2 with surface winds speed reaching between 70 to 80 knots (126 to 144 km/h).
According to the Oman News Agency, the cyclone will intensify within the upcoming 12 hours. The national forecast indicated that the center of tropical cyclone was approaching governorate of Dhofar coasts, leading to heavy thundershowers and accumulated rainwater ranging from 200 to 300 mm, which will lead to flash floods.
The sea state will be rough along Dhofar and Al-Wusta governorates' coasts with maximum wave height between 8 to 12 meters.
The Public Authority for Civil Aviation advised all individuals to follow the weather bulletins and take precautions regarding flash floods, avoiding the sea as much as possible. (end) ahr.gta
