New EU data protection rules to apply to all companies based in Europe

BRUSSELS, May 24 (KUNA) -- The European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), adopted in April 2016, will apply fully as of Friday 25 May.
The rules aim to protect all EU citizens from privacy and data breaches in an increasingly data-driven world, while creating a clearer and more consistent framework for businesses, the European Parliament said in a press release Thursday.
The new rules apply to all companies operating in the EU, even if these companies are based outside the EU, it noted.
Firms that are breaking the new rules can face fines which in the most serious cases is 4 percent of the company's total worldwide annual turnover. (end) nk.mt
