"WHO" announces Ebola outbreak in Congo

GENEVA, May 23 (KUNA) -- World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Wednesday that a total of 58 Ebola virus cases have been reported, including 27 deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The new cases of Ebola virus disease have been confirmed in Wangata, one of the three health zones of Mbandaka, a city of nearly 1.2 million people in Equateur Province in northwestern Congo, the World Health Organization stated.
World Health Organization continues to strengthen monitoring and tracking the emergence of Ebola virus cases while continuing training the medical staff with different methods of sterilization, a WHO statement said.
The organization mentioned, there is no urgent risk to apply restrictions on traveling or trading in West Africa, provided that the emergency committee remains ready to monitor any changes in the situation.
The World Health Organization recommended the neighboring countries to the Democratic Republic of Congo to promote preparations and be ready to monitor any update regarding the virus, with the need to check all airports and ports on the Congo River.
The first human outbreaks of Ebola occurred in 1976, one in the north of what is now Congo and in the region that is now South Sudan.
Humans can be infected by other humans if they come in contact with body fluids from an infected person or contaminated objects from infected persons. Humans can also be exposed to the virus, for example, by butchering infected animals.(end) ta.aa
