Iran responds to remarks by Pompeo

TEHRAN, May 21 (KUNA) -- In response to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo earlier statement and accusation to Iran of supporting terrorism in the Middle East, Iran said Monday that such new strategy comes to fill the gap created by US withdraw from the nuclear treaty.
A statement by the Iranian foreign ministry said remarks by Pompeo are revealing "the inability of American officials and their frustration in front of the Iranian people and their attempts to divert world public opinion from the illegal action of violating the nuclear agreement.
"The US administration is not in a position to set conditions for Iran and it must realize that" evading the law and breaking the agreement would have consequences caused by violation of international laws, the statement added.
The statement called on the United States not to "interfere" in Iran's affairs, saying "Washington has no right to take a decision on Iran's policies in the region." Earlier, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo threatened "the strongest sanctions in history" against Iran if it doesn't change course, and issued a list of demands he wants to be included in a new nuclear treaty with Tehran.
"This is just the beginning. The sting of sanctions will be painful," Pompeo said before the conservative Heritage Foundation.
"These will be the strongest sanctions in history when complete," Pompeo said. (end) mw.mb
