EU reiterates commitment to Iran's nuclear deal

TEHRAN, May 19 (KUNA) -- European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Canete on Saturday reaffirmed continuing EU commitment to the nuclear agreement with Iran.
Canete made the remark during a joint press conference with Iranian Atomic Energy Organization Chairman Ali Akbar Salehi in Tehran.
"We met today to confirm the continuing commitment of the European Commission and the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran towards the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)," he said.
The JCPOA represents the fruit of more than a decade of successful multilateral diplomacy which signifies the imperative of peaceful settlement of dispute and is a key element of the global nuclear non-proliferation architecture, he said.
The International Atomic Energy Agency has so far confirmed in ten successive reports that Iran has implemented its nuclear related commitments under the JCPOA, and, for its part, the European Union will remain committed to the continued full and effective implementation of the JCPOA, as long as Iran continues to implement its nuclear related commitments, he added.
A number of ongoing projects address nuclear safety cooperation including: a project for stress testing of Iran's first nuclear power plant, Bushehr-1; a project to prepare for the establishment of a nuclear safety center in Iran, and projects to enhance the capabilities of Iran's Nuclear Regulatory Authority, the EU official noted.
On his part, the Iranian official said there were suggestions regarding bank issues and use of euro in financial deals between Iran and the EU.
He quoted the EU as having vowed to continue cooperation with Iran in the nuclear field and to invest USD 20 million in an advanced nuclear safety center.
The EU official arrived in Tehran late Friday in the first visit by an EU official to Tehran since the US decided to walk away from the nuclear deal. (end) mw.mt
