CAIRO, May 17 (KUNA) -- Kuwait's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah on Thursday renewed the State of Kuwait call for protecting the Palestinian people and voiced deep concern at Israel's unilateral moves aimed at "changing facts IN the occupied territories." The State of Kuwait demands measures "to contribute to securing international protection for the brotherly Palestinian people," he said.
"We also affirm stipulations in the (United Nations) Security Council Resolutions 605 and 904 with respect of the applicability the Fourth Geneva Convention to the occurrences in the occupied Palestinian territories and the necessity of securing international protection for the unarmed Palestinian people," said minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled in his statement at the extraordinary Arab ministerial meeting.
A series of international resolutions have been issued in support of the Palestinian people rights and their legitimate political aspirations, however and regretfully, as a result of Israel's intransigence and its non-compliance with international commitments, nothing tangible has been achieved in this regard since start of the Israeli occupation in 1967, Sheikh Sabah Khaled stated.
"Furthermore, we are deeply concerned at the unilateral policies and measures taken by Israel, the occupation power, aimed at altering the facts in the occupied territories.
"These are illegal and illegitimate and flagrant breaches of the relevant international resolutions and references, namely Resolutions 242, 334, 465, 476, 478, 2334 which affirm that all the unilateral measures and resolutions designed to change the legal and historic status and imposing a new status are null and baseless." Adding in this vein, Sheikh Sabah emphasized that the Israeli steps constituted explicit breach of signed treaties that compelled the signatory parties to abstain from taking any moves that may undermine results of the final status negotiations, namely with respect of Jerusalem.
The holy city, he elaborates, is one of the final status issues and east Jerusalem is the capital of the Palestinian State which must be established so that security, stability and peace may be ensured for the region.
Such a state must be established as an independent and sovereign state according to the fourth of June 1967 borders, the relevant international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab peace initiative.
Sheikh Sabah Khaled renewed the State of Kuwait solidarity with the brotherly Palestinian people for defending their just cause, legitimate rights including their constant and historic rights in Jerusalem, as ensured by relevant international resolutions.
He has renewed the State of Kuwait -- as a member state of the UNSC -- unwavering stand in defending the Palestinian cause as the number-one question of the Arabs and Muslims.
He also renewed support for a proposal to form an "independent investigation mechanism" to look into recurring Israeli breaches.
The Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister started his statement, expressing condolences to the Palestinian Government, the Palestinian people and families of the innocent who had fallen as martyrs in the recent events.
He also wished quick recovery for thousands of Palestinians who were hurt as a result of the blatant offensive, waged the occupation Israeli forces on Monday.
He condemned Israel's recurring breaches of UNSC resolutions, international laws and treaties, latest of which was "the bloody massacre on the Gaza border, claiming lives of more than 60 Palestinian citizens including children and injuring more than 2,700 others." The UNSC inability to undertake its responsibilities with respect of safeguarding international security has "allowed Israel to continue such violations of the international law, human rights' laws and the other relevant international resolutions," Sheikh Sabah Khaled said.
These Israeli breaches had prompted the State of Kuwait, as a non-permanent member in the UNSC, to call last Tuesday for an emergency session, in response to "the tragic events afflicting the brothers in Palestine." Moreover, the State of Kuwait, with full coordination with the government of the brotherly State of Palestine, sought over the past three weeks, to issue statements calling for a transparent and independent international probe into the massacres perpetrated against the unarmed Palestinian people and bringing the perpetrators to justice, however "regretfully these calls have not seen the light," he stated.
The extraordinary meeting in Cairo was held in response to a request by Saudi Arabia to discuss the developments in the occupied territories. (end) ms.rk
