AFRICOM verifies alleged civilian casualties in Somalia raid

WASHINGTON, May 11 (KUNA) -- US forces, in an "advise-and-assist capacity," partnered in a Somali-led operation to disrupt and degrade Al-Shabaab's terrorist network near Bulcida, Somalia.
The US Africa Command (AFRICOM) however said in a press release on Friday, "We are aware of reports alleging civilian casualties resulting from this operation, and we take these reports seriously." According to reports, five civilians were killed in the raid that took place on Wednesday, May 9.
"As with any allegations of civilian casualties we receive, AFRICOM will review any information it has about the incident, including any relevant information provided by third parties," according to the statement.
If the information supporting the allegation is determined to be credible, AFRICOM will determine the next appropriate step, it affirmed.
It stressed that the Department of Defense is "fully committed to countering the threat of global terrorism, and will continue to support capable partners in the region." (end) si.gb
