GCC Chief welcomes Trump's withdrawal from Iranian nuclear agreement

RIYADH, May 9 (KUNA) -- The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary General Dr. Abdullatif Al-Zayani welcomed Wednesday US President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the nuclear agreement with Iran, reinstating tougher sanctions against Tehran.
Al-Zayani said in a press statement that Trump took a brave stance to ensure the Middle East region was free from nuclear weapons in response to Iran's regional policies based on expansion, hegemony and interference in the internal affairs of its country.
Trump's decision also came to prevent Iran's support of terrorist organizations and continuing to develop its ballistic missile program, which is of flagrant violation of international resolutions and laws, a matter that threatens the stability and security of the region.
Al-Zayani called on the international community to join the US in its firm stance on the agreement in order to maintain international peace and security.
US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the US will withdraw from the nuclear agreement with Iran signed in 2015, and that he will reinstate sanctions against Tehran. The New York Times quotes Trump in his speech saying, "The Iran deal is defective at its core." (end) ad.lr
