AMMAN, May 5 (KUNA) -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said in Amman Saturday the Palestinian people could never forget "the noble stances" of the State of Kuwait towards them and their fair cause.
In tribute to Kuwait's stances, President Abbas said he decided to grant Kuwait Ambassador to Ethiopia and Representative to the African Union (AU) Rashed Al-Hajeri the Jerusalem Star medal.
"This decoration comes in appreciation of Ambassador Al-Hajeri's efforts to use his position in lobbying for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people," he said.
President Abbas made the statements to KUNA during the honoring ceremony that gathered Kuwait Ambassador to Jordan Dr. Hamad Al-Du'aij and Palestine Ambassador to Ethiopia and Representative to the AU Dr. Nasri Abu-Jaish.
"Ambassador Al-Hajeri is a shining example of Kuwaiti diplomats who stand by the Palestinian people in their fair question, and materialize the noble stances of the Kuwait under His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
"Kuwait and Palestine maintain sisterly ties on the political and people-to-people levels," President Abbas said, recalling Kuwait's support to Palestine since the foundation of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).
On his part, Ambassador Al-Hajeri reaffirmed Kuwait's commitment to backing the fair question of Palestine at all regional and international forums, notably the UN Security Council and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
Kuwait is non-permanent member of the Council.
Ambassador Al-Hajeri pledged, in a similar statement to KUNA, to continue lobbying for the Palestinian question among the AU member states at the behest of His Highness the Amir.
He thanked President Abbas for the honoring, adding that he conveyed to the Palestinian leader the greetings of His Highness the Amir and the Kuwaiti people and government.
He dedicated the medal to Kuwait's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah.
Meanwhile, Ambassador Abu-Jaish expressed gratitude for Kuwait's long-standing support to Palestine and appreciated Al-Hajeri's solidarity with Palestine. (end) mjb.gb
