EU condemns attack on Electoral Commission in Libya

BRUSSELS, May 2 (KUNA) -- The European Union (EU) condemned on Wednesday a terrorist attack targeted the Libyan High National Electoral Commission (HNEC) in Tripoli in which 12 people were reported killed and several injured.
"The HNEC plays an important role in the development of legitimate institutions in Libya.
The attack, targeting directly its work, must be promptly investigated," said Maja Kocijancic, spokesperson for EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, in a statement.
She noted that future elections in Libya will be key for establishing stable, unified, representative and effective governance for the country.
"All Libyans deserve to live in peace and security.
The European Union reiterates its firm support to the inclusive UN mediation process and efforts by the Special Representative Ghassan Salame to forge a lasting solution to the crisis in Libya," the spokesperson said.
The EU expects all legitimate Libyan actors to work towards this goal, showing willingness to compromise and by putting the interests of the Libyan people first, she added. (end) nk.mb
