France condemns bomb attack against Libyan Electoral Commission

PARIS, May 2 (KUNA) -- France on Wednesday condemned an attack earlier in the day against the HQ of Libya's High National Election Commission (HNEC) in Tripoli, where at least 12 people died and many were injured.
Suicide bombers and militants carried out the attack that has been claimed by the so-called Islamic State terrorist group.
"The High Electoral Commission, the target of the attack, plays a crucial role in organising elections," the French Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Paris remarked that many Libyans had registered to vote and want to see the elections held as promised.
"Terrorists will not stop their willingness for this," the French statement added.
Condemning the attack, France "reiterates its support for the mediation undertaken by the Ghassan Salame, the special representative of the United Nations Secretary General, who supports the work of the High (Electoral) Commission," Paris remarked.
The elections are part of an overall "Road Map" that is under discussion between the various Libyan factions, under Salame's auspices. (end) jk.sd
