KUWAIT, April 30 (KUNA) -- The protection of human rights is deeply embedded in Kuwait's political ideology and endorsed by the Islamic faith, a Kuwaiti diplomat said on Monday.
Kuwait's Assistant Foreign Minister on International Cooperation Affairs and Development Nasser Al-Sabeeh made the remarks in a speech on behalf of Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Al-Jarallah in a seminar organized by the Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry.
"Kuwait's contributions towards humanitarian causes give credence to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah's UN-bestowed moniker of Humanitarian Leader," the diplomat said.
He went on to say that the UN's sustainable development goals revolve around the notion of human rights, explaining that nations that rank high on the human development index usually have immaculate human rights records. One of the topics included in the seminar is the private sector's weighty responsibility to ensure that its economic goals actually promote human rights, the Kuwaiti diplomat added.
Meanwhile, the UN's Resident Coordinator Tarek El Sheikh hailed Kuwait as among the frontrunners in efforts to protect human rights, citing the seminar as an earnest endeavor on the part of the Kuwaiti foreign ministry. He told KUNA that the countries in the region should follow in Kuwait's footsteps by actively engaging with the private sector through programs and activities in the human rights arena.
