KNPC continues controlling Al-Maqwa oil leakage fire

KUWAIT, April 25 (KUNA) -- Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) is continuing to contain the oil leakage that took place early last Monday in Al-Maqwa near Burgan oil well, which resulted in a fire located 750 meters away from the leakage.
The company took all the needed procedures to guarantee limitation of the fire to surrounding areas.
KOC added in a press release today that Minister of Oil and Minister of Electricty and Water Bekheet Al-Rishidi and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation Nezar Al-Adsai conducted a field trip yesterday to KOC's crisis management center.
They were received by the company's senior management and were briefed on the procedures followed by KOC and other concerned bodies, it added.
They also checked on the progress of the operations, workers and building's safety, it added.
KOC's special teams in cooperation with international companies' experts continued working since the first day of the leakage 24 hours, seven days a week according to the leakage encountering plan, taking in consideration all the safety procedures for the workers and buildings, it added.
KOC assured that the instantaneous readings of the gas emission rates through the developed devices deployed around the leakage area and other locations did not indicate nor posed danger on the workers or the surrounding company's buildings, it added.
It quoted KOC's senior management as saying that since the first day of the leakage it activated the emergency safety and environmental plans, indicating that this incident did not affect the production operations, as they are functioning normally.
The controlling operations of this fire is complicated as the teams are working in critical circumstances, including dealing with dangerous substances of high sensitivity under unstable climate conditions, it said.
This fire did not drain the oil resources as some media reports mentioned, as KOC stressed its instantaneous follow-up of the latest developments of the incident.
KOC announced last Monday that a fire, erupted in Al-Maqwa area due to oil leak, was under control.
There were no readings for gas leakage in the area, said the KOC, adding that the fire did not cause any casualties.
Specialized rescue teams, in cooperation with Kuwait Fire Service Directorate (KFSD), managed to put the fire under control, reaffirmed the company. (end) asj.tb.lb
