Macron says he and Trump are political "mavericks"

WASHINGTON, April 22 (KUNA) -- French President Emmanuel Macron beleives he and President Donald Trump are political "mavericks" who have a "very special relationship," he said ahead of his visit to Washington in an interview with Fox News Sunday.
"We have a very special relationship because both of us are probably the maverick of the systems on both sides," said Macron. "I think President Trump's election was unexpected in your country, and probably my election was unexpected in my country. And we are not part of the classical political system." Macron said he hopes his visit will illustrate the US and France's long history and that he will ask the US Congress to support ending influence of dictators in rogue nations.
"We are very much attached to the same values, especially liberty and peace," he said. "And I think the US today has a very strong role to play for peace in different regions of the world and especially Middle East." He said that special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into possible collusion between Trump's 2016 campaign and Russia has "no impact" on the president's credibility.
"I work with him because both of us are very much at the service of our countries on both sides," Macron said. (end) ak.mt
