Belgium, Germany call for avoidance of military escalation in Syria

BRUSSELS, April 13 (KUNA) -- Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders and his German counterpart Heiko Maas said Friday that a political solution is the only way to resolve the conflict in Syria.
Speaking to journalists after their meeting in Brussels, the two foreign ministers stressed that "military escalation" must be avoided.
"We should wait before making pronouncements about military intervention. We should certainly avoid a military escalation. That is the most important thing. A political solution is needed. We should exert pressure on the Syrian regime to come to the table to discuss reaching such a solution," said Reynders.
Mass said he shared his Belgian counterpart's views. (end) nk.mt
