Trump, Iraqi PM discuss IS, situation in Syria

WASHINGTON, April 8 (KUNA) -- US President Donald Trump received a phone call from Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi during which they discussed the so-called Islamic State (IS) and the situation in Syria, the White House announced Sunday.
The White House said in a statement that Al-Abadi thanked Trump "for the decisive support of the United States in the fight against (IS)." It added that "the leaders also discussed accelerating the campaign to defeat remnants of (IS) and the need to work together to counter other threats in the region.
"They discussed the situation in Syria and the alarming reports of possible chemical attacks near Damascus," it added.
It noted that finally, Trump "emphasized the importance of Iraqi unity in advance of the upcoming elections." (end) si.ibi
