Sudan to acquire nuclear energy by 2031

By Mohammad Abdulaziz KHARTOUM, April 5 (KUNA) -- Sudan's "roadmap" agreement with Russia to build nuclear power stations will boost its electricity production by 2031.
Sudan's Minister of Water Resources and Electricity Muataz Musa said the agreement would allow for the construction of a peaceful nuclear energy program and also train Sudanese cadres in this field.
Sudan's Ministry of Electricity spokesman Mohammad Abdulrahim Jawish told KUNA Thursday that the final agreement will allow Sudan to build in the future a nuclear plant to generate nuclear energy for peaceful use For his part, director of the General Directorate of Nuclear energy Generation Nasser Ahmed Al-Mustafa said that Sudan plans to reach 8,500 megawatts by 2031.
In 2012, Sudan informed the International Atomic Energy Agency of its intention to pursue nuclear technology that would generate electricity and would meet the increasing demand of the country's growing population by 2031.
The increase in power demand in Sudan is 14 percent per year against an annual output of 3,000 MW. The country imports from Ethiopia 250 megawatts to meet the growing demand for electricity in the country.
Six years ago, Sudan began to make use of nuclear energy for peaceful aims and agreed last year with Russia's Rosatom, a Russian government nuclear power company, to cooperate in this field. (end) mab.haq
