US announces USD 87 mln in aid to Yemen

WASHINGTON, April 3 (KUNA) -- The United States announced a nearly USD 87 million in humanitarian aid to Yemen on Tuesday to help displaced and vulnerable Yemenis.
The assistance includes food, safe drinking water, treatment for malnourished children, emergency shelters and other critical aid, the State Department said at the conclusion of a Yemen High-Level Pledging Conference in Geneva.
The funds were jointly provided by the Department of State and USAID, it noted in a statement.
The US went on to commend both Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates for a recent USD 930 million presented to the United Nations targeting humanitarian efforts in Yemen.
"We call on other donors to increase their share of funding, and we welcome the announcements of additional pledges at the pledging conference today," it added.
The State Department also called for an "enduring solution" to the ongoing conflict in Yemen, through a "comprehensive political agreement, which will require compromise from all sides." (end) hy.sd
