UK urges Israeli govt. to improve treatment of Palestinian children

LONDON, March 23 (KUNA) -- Britain's Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa Alistair Burt urged the Israeli government Friday to improve the treatment of detained Palestinian children.
Safeguarding Palestinian children in Israeli prisons should be a top priority due for its link to human rights, Burt said in a press statement.
"The conviction and sentencing of Ahed Tamimi is emblematic of how the unresolved the ongoing conflict is blighting the lives of a new generation who should be growing up together in peace, but continue to be divided," said Burt.
"The treatment of Palestinian children in Israeli military detention remains a human rights priority for the UK. We will continue to call upon Israel to improve its practices in line with international law and obligations," he added.
Britain has offered to help the Israeli authorities through expert-to-expert talks with British officials, Burt mentioned, noting the Israelis had made some improvements but needed to do much more to safeguard vulnerable people in its care. (end) mrn.ma
