Kuwait participates in Switzerland-hosted international info. summit

GENEVA, March 22 (KUNA) -- Board member of (Kuwait's) Communication and Information Technology Regulatory Authority (CITRA) Sheikha Latifa Dawood Al-Sabah underlined on Thursday importance of Kuwait's participation in the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2018, currently held in Switzerland.
Sheikha Latifa said to KUNA that the strategic and geographic location of Kuwait helps it to become a leader in information and communication technology in the Gulf region and the Arabic world. Moreover, its people are keen on following up on latest communication innovations.
Kuwait, following the 1990 invasion, executed the e-government scheme, shifting in phases from paper transactions in public departments to digital tasks, she said.
Employing the digital technology in Kuwait has helped in connecting all public departments among them, with the private sector and with individuals, Sheikha Latifa added.
For her part, Director of Public Sector Governance Department in CITRA Manal Al-Meziad noted importance of the Kuwaiti authority participation in such an international forum.
People of Kuwait and other GCC countries enjoy an electronic digital culture, acquired through proliferation of smart phones and computers of different uses in various fields, she said.
GCC peoples, bulk of whom now possess smart phones and other communication devices, have been quite cooperate with respect of digitizing transactions, therefore, much time and efforts have been saved, she added.
Al-Meziad said a series of important initiatives and projects have been launched, following directions by CITRA Chairman Salem Al-Othainah.
She shed some light on an aspired mega regional project, called "the regional corridor" between Kuwait and Iraq, linking cables between East and West through the Arabian Gulf.
This important project will develop Kuwait's infrastructure, make it a global communication leader and provide many jobs and investments.
The World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) 2018, which kicked off on March 20, would proceed till March 23 (tomorrow Friday). (end) ta.nhq
