ABU DHABI, March 18 (KUNA) -- Kuwaiti athletes with intellectual disabilities won gold, silver and bronze medals at Special Olympics IX MENA Games Abu Dhabi 2018, as competitions kick off in UAE capital earlier Sunday.
The Kuwaiti athletes succeeded in standing on podiums amidst competition from 32 countries, Rehab Burusly, Chairwoman of Al-Tomooh Sport Club for Intellectual Disabilities of Kuwait, told KUNA.
She said athletes were very keen on achieving top places despite the fact the club was officially established days before the Special Olympic games.
Burusly said Mohammad Sami and Mishal Al-Bader won the gold medals in the swimming butterfly and Chest stroke races.
Fawziya Al-Sawwagh won the silver medal of the women bowling event, while Rashed Al-Qabandi won bronze of men table tennis.
Burusly said the team included 50 athletes competing in football, basketball, table tennis, swimming, track and field, bowling and bocce.
The special Olympics IX MENA Games and Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2018 are part of the UAE's National Vision 2021 that highlights full integration of people of determination into everyday society. (end) bsu.bs
