Former FBI deputy director fired two days before retirement

WASHINGTON, March 17 (KUNA) -- US Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired former FBI Deputy Director Andy McCabe for accusations by the Department of Justice inspector general of authorizing the disclosure of sensitive information to a reporter and misleading investigators when asked about it, it was announced late Friday.
McCabe, who was a target of criticism from President Donald Trump for a long time, stepped down as deputy director of the FBI in January but remained an employee there and was planning to retire on Sunday.
Sessions said in a statement that "McCabe made an unauthorized disclosure to the news media and lacked candor - including under oath - on multiple occasions. I have terminated the employment of Andrew McCabe effective immediately," Sessions said, and that the FBI "expects every employee to adhere to the highest standards of honesty, integrity and accountability." For his part, McCabe denied these allegations, saying, "The idea that I was dishonest is just wrong. This is part of an effort to discredit me as a witness" in the special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.
He added, "To have my career end in this way, and to be accused of lacking candor when at worst I was distracted in the midst of chaotic events, is incredibly disappointing and unfair". (end) si.hb
