Pakistan's ruling party bags highest seats in Senate elections

ISLAMABAD, March 4 (KUNA) -- The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Sunday announced the official results of Senate (Upper House) elections 2018, where 133 candidates contested for 52 seats.
According to detailed official result, the ruling Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) supported candidates have won majority seats from federal and eastern Punjab province, securing 15 seats in total. The opposition party, Pakistan People's Party (PPP), emerged dominant in southern Sindh province and won 12 seats of the Upper House.
Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) managed to get dominance in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province securing six seats in total. National Party and Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party clinched two seats each, while political parties Jammiat Ulema Islam (F), Jamat Islami, Mutahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and PML-F won one each. Ten independent candidates have also won in the Senate Election across the country.
After the elections, the overall strength of each party shows 33 PML-N-backed candidates, 20 PPP candidates, 15 independent candidates, 12 PTI candidates, five candidates of MQM, PkMAP and NP each, four candidates of JUI-F, two candidates of JI, and one candidate from each of the PML-F, ANP and Balochistan National Party-Mengal in the house.
The Upper House of parliament is a body of 104 lawmakers that serves a term of six years. They are not all elected at the same time: rather, half are elected at one time, and the other half three years later. (end) sbk.hb
