Germany confirms journalist release by Turkey

MUNICH, Feb 16 (KUNA) -- Germany confirmed Friday the release of its journalist Deniz Yucel, whom Turkey detained a year ago on charges of promoting terror and inciting riots.
German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel had worked intensively in the past days towards finding a solution for the situation, foreign ministry spokesman said in a statement.
The German government, thus, thanks the Turkish judiciary for Yucel's release, the spokesman added, noting his government is currently awaiting next steps and actions.
On Thursday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel held talks with Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim in Berlin, during which they discussed their bilateral relationship and Yucel's case.
Merkel, in a joint press conference afterwards with Yildirim, said that Yucel's case is of importance to the German government, urging Turkish Prime Minister to release the German journalist as soon as possible.
Yucel, who has a dual German-Turkish citizenship, is a correspondent for German daily Die Welt. The Turkish authorities arrested him on February 14, 2017 and charged him with working for terrorist organizations. (end) anj.ma
