Bahrain's National Action Charter Day .. a leap in democratic progress

By Hammad Al-Mutiari MANAMAH, Feb 13 (KUNA) -- The Kingdom of Bahrain will celebrate tomorrow the 17th annual celebration of the anniversary of the National Action Charter on 14th February, which was a milestone and a distinguished turning point in the history of the Kingdom.
Back on February 14 and 15 of the year 2001, the voting centers witnessed a high turnout of voters at the age of 21 in response to the desire of King of Bahrain Hamad Bin Issa in improving the country's political system in a public referendum, which was distinguished by integrity and well organization.
Bahrain, since its independence, worked hardly to lay the pillars of modern state that cherishes democratic approach through its constitutional institutions, with respect to the rule of law.
Bahrain's National Action Charter Day is a distinguished step in the country's political progress as a large number of achievements and initiatives were fulfilled by Bahrain, like establishing the parliament and resuming the parliamentary activities.
Economic wise, Bahrain supported the freedom of market and the foreign investment, which allowed the private sector to boost the national economy, as well as establishing various economic bodies and settling vision of 2030 economy.
Bahrain's King Hamad Bin Issa issued a decree back in 2000 to transfor the country's political system from an Emirate to a Kingdom by forming a higher national committee to prepare the project.
This committee included various remarkable political, social and academic figures, which presented the Charter by 2001.
The King issued later in 2001 an order calling on all Bahraini citizens to vote for the referendum by February 14, in order to commence a new phase of democratic progress. (end) hmd.lb
