UN: examining all chemical weapons use allegations in Syria

NEW YORK, Feb 5 (KUNA) -- UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu said Monday a fact-finding mission of the Organisation for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) was examining all allegations over use of chemical weapons in Syria.
Alleged use of toxic chemical materials like chlorine took place in areas not under the Syrian government's control, Nakamitsu told a UN Security Council session on situation in Syria.
She said there was another team examining allegations presented by the Syrian government over the use of chemical weapons.
She said more work was needed to confirm full implementation of UN resolution 2118, which considered proliferation of chemical weapons threatened international peace and security.
The resolution, approved in 2013, condemned the use of chemical weapons in Syria and called for rapid termination of the Syrian chemical weapons program.
Nakamitsu hoped those responsible for the alleged use of chemical weapons' attack be prosecuted. (end) asf.bs
