Israel apologizes over embassy incident in Amman

AMMAN, Jan 18 (KUNA) -- The Israeli government on Thursday apologized to Jordan over the deadly shooting incident at its embassy in Amman and pledged to pay compensations to victims' families.
The Jordanian Minister of State for Media Affairs Mohammad Momani said the Foreign Ministry received a memorandum from Israel's foreign ministry, expressing "regret" over the fatal shooting, according to Jordan's Petra news agency.
A guard of the Israeli embassy shot dead in last July two Jordanians, identified as Mohammad Jawawdah and Bashar Hamarneh.
Israel has also apologized for the killing of Raed Zuaiter - a judge at the Amman Court of First Instance, by an Israeli soldier in 2014, the minister pointed out.
The Israeli government pledged to continue legal proceedings to serve justice, as well as to compensate the martyrs' families, said Momani, who is also the government spokesperson.
The memorandum expressed the Israeli government commitment to resume cooperation with the government of Jordan and resolve this issue.
The Jordanian government will take appropriate action according to the higher national interests as the memo stated that Israel would comply with all conditions Jordan asked following the embassy incident in order to allow the Israeli ambassador to return to Amman, the minister said.
He added that the Jordanian government contacted the martyrs' families, who accepted the apology and the compensation. (end) mjb.gb
