Ministers' meeting on North Korea pushes global cooperation

WASHINGTON, Jan 18 (KUNA) -- Ministers from 20 countries meeting in Vancouver to discuss North Korea's nuclear program concluded that it is important to work closely with China and Russia, who were both not invited to the talks.
Although China and Russia were not invited to the meetings, the representatives recognized "China's special role and responsibility to contribute to the effort," according to State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert.
Other areas they agreed on, included better information sharing and expanded support to the UN panel on North Korea and extra support for international pressure campaigns through diplomatic advocacy in order to push forward global sanctions and prevent proliferation funding, said Nauert.
The meetings' main goals were to persuade North Korea to abandon its current course and create conditions conducive to dialogue, reiterated the official. (end) ak.sd
