DOHA, Jan 17 (KUNA) -- Miroslav Lajcak, chairman of the UN General Assembly's 72nd session, said on Wednesday that strifes across the globe cost USD 14.3 billion annually.
Speaking in a lecture at Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, Lajcak revealed that the United Nations spends more than USD eight billion per year on peace keeping missions worldwide, arguing "ironically there is no peace whatsoever to be preserved in the regions where the peacekeepers are deployed.
"It is necessary to begin employing in operations that avert flare-up of conflicts for such employment is much more effective because each dollar spent on averting break-out of strifes spares 10 dollars spent on operations to stop them." He criticized the UN for lacking mechanisms for averting breakout of conflicts. (end) nnd.rk
