BRUSSELS, Jan 15 (KUNA) -- Nasr Al Hariri, General Coordinator and Head of the Syrian Negotiation Commission, and his accompanying delegation held an informal meeting with the EU's Political and Security Committee in Brussels Monday related to the current situation in Syria.
In press statements after the meeting, Al Hariri emphasised the big role the EU plays in the political process, and in the humanitarian field.
"We know that the European Union is one of our best friends, and they have done a lot in the humanitarian area. And they are still doing that," he said.
"To improve the course of the political process and to push the political process to reach results, which is very important, we ask our friends here to concentrate and to focus on the issue of accountability and detainees," stressed the Syrian opposition leader.
On the political field, he noted that the Geneva process didn't succeed in the eighth round of negotiations.
"So now we also discussed how the EU can use its leverage to push the regime and the states that are supporting the regime, to come and negotiate at the table," said Al Hariri.
He pointed out that the situation on the ground, in Idlib, is "very bad".
"We have at least 200,000 people displaced during the last two weeks. And we have also between 150 to 200 persons, the majority of them are children and women, who have been killed. So we have asked the EU to continue their humanitarian aid to support these people in these areas," he added. (end) nk.hm
