Roadside blast kills 5 policemen in Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD, Jan 1 (KUNA) -- At least five Afghan Local Police (ALP) personnel have been killed, including their commander, as a result of a roadside bomb explosion in Afghanistan's central Logar province, said official on Monday.
Provincial governor's spokesman, Salim Saleh told media that the explosion took place in the Ghondai village of Mohammad Agha district in Logar.
He confirmed that five ALP members, including Commander Faqeer Ahmad, were killed when their vehicle struck a remote-controlled roadside bomb. "Police frequented the route, on which militants planted explosives," he added.
According to local media, spokesman for Taliban rebels, Zabihullah Mujahid claimed that Taliban had planted the mine saying that their weapons were captured by the fighters.
Earlier on Sunday, at least 18 people were killed and over 15 others wounded in an explosion at a funeral of a former district chief in Jalalabad city of Afghanistan's eastern Nangarhar province.
The blast came days after United States Vice President, Mike Pence visited Afghanistan and reaffirmed Washington's full support for peace, stability and economic development of the country during his meeting with Afghan President. (end) sbk.tg
