Palestine takes US Jerusalem move to UN

NEW YORK, Dec 7 (KUNA) -- Permanent Observer of the State of Palestine to the United Nations Dr. Riyad H. Mansour said Thursday his country sent messages of complaint to UN Secretary General and Japan, the current presidency of the UN Security Council, regarding the US recognition of Jerusalem as capital of Israel.
The two almost identical messages have been delivered by Palestinian Deputy Permanent Observer to the UN Feda Abdelhady-Nasser to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Japan's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Koro Bessho, he said, citing readout of the messages.
The deplorable decision, announced by US President Donald Trump yesterday, runs counter to the UNSC resolutions and the international consensus. Therefore, the UNSC has to shoulder its responsibility and act promptly to address this critical issue without delay, he stressed.
The Palestinian envoy urged the international community to make clear their stance on the legal status quo in Jerusalem and reject any unilateral move by the US to tamper with the status of the holy city.
The messages highlight the need of commitment by all concerned parties to the Middle East peace process and the principles of the final status talks which stipulate that the future of Jerusalem should be determined through direct negotiation between the Palestinians and the Israelis. (end) asf.gb
