KUWAIT, Nov 12 (KUNA) -- The "women in war" conference will discuss the role of NGOs and international organizations in protecting women in time of war, said Chairperson of Al-Nowair Initiative Sheikha Intisar Salem Al-Ali Al-Sabah.
The one-day conference will be held in Kuwait on November 20, in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the participation of Kuwaiti women activists, she said in a press conference on Sunday.
Women carry the burden of protecting and providing care for all family members in war, without receiving enough support from NGOs and other organizations, said Sheikha Intisar.
Women had played big roles in war throughout history, as in World War I for example, women replaced men in civilian jobs and had also worked as nurses in the army, she added.
She also spoke about the role and efforts of Kuwaiti women since the country gained independence in 1961, as well as during the Iraqi Invasion in 1990.
On his part, head of ICRC's regional delegation in Kuwait Yahya Al-Olaibi said that the international law states that the rights of women must be protected in war, those include supporting their role as mothers and provide them with proper health care.
He noted that the conference will also include a three-day exhibition on formative art by regional and international artists, who will present their work to showcase the suffering of women in war time. (end) akw.ag
