Belgian authorities ask Imam of Islamic Centre to leave the country

BRUSSELS, Oct 3 (KUNA) -- Belgian State Secretary for Asylum and Migration Theo Francken has decided not to extend the residence permit of the main Imam of the Islamic Centre in Brussels, Belgian media reported Tuesday.
The man is in principle illegal on our territory and has to leave Belgium. He has now appealed against the decision, said the reports.
Francken said he took the decision based on information from the Belgian intelligence services.
"I got information that the man is a threat to our national security because he is a follower of salafism.. He is no longer welcome here," Francken was quoted as saying.
Abdul Hadi Sweif, an Egyptian national, has been the Imam of the Islamic Centre in Brussels for over 10 years. (end) nk.sd
