KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 24 (KUNA) -- The Indonesian authorities evacuated around 28,000 villagers residing close to Mount Agung in Bali Island as Agung's volcano's eruption is getting closer, after recording more than 300 earthquakes since last Friday.
Local dailies quoted the Indonesia police as saying that villagers were evacuated to shelters located 12 kilometers from the top of the mountain after raising the alert to its highest levels by Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geologic Hazard Mitigation (CVGMH).
Bali Ngurah Rai International Airport is functioning as normal, and is fully prepared to encounter the current situation, while the touristic companies work is still on in the remaining parts if the Island, the local authorities said.
Mount Agung witnessed a series of eruptions between 1963 and 1964 resulted in the killing of more than 1000 people and injuring hundreds.
Indonesia is located on a Ring of Fire in the Pacific Ocean, which is full of a string of volcanoes and sites of seismic activity, or earthquakes, around the edges of the Pacific Ocean, as the country has 130 active volcanos.(end) aab.lb
