UNRWA: 1,000 housing units for Palestinians this year

GAZA, April 3 (KUNA) -- The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has announced a construction of about 1000 new housing units this year for Palestinians whose homes were destroyed during the last Israeli war against the Gaza Strip in 2014.
Bo chak, head of UNRWA's operations, said in a press statement on Sunday the agency received a financial support which could help build about 2,000 units, 1,000 of them will be built this year.
He added that construction operation has already started for rebuilding 700 homes destroyed during the 51-day war.
He noted that the financial deficit facing the agency prevented it from establishing thousands of homes, calling on the Israeli authorities to lift blockage imposed on Gaza and allow construction materials to enter the Strip so as to rebuild destroyed homes. Bo chak welcomed an upcoming international conference to be held by the Palestinian Authority on April 13 on rebuilding in Gaza.
According to UNRWA's statistics, the Israeli war destroyed about 141,114 homes of Palestinians, 9,117 of them were totally demolished. (end) ab.hm
