Australian PM, US Defense Secretary discuss Afghanistan, ISIL

WASHINGTON, Jan 18 (KUNA) -- Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull met with US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter at the Pentagon on Monday to discuss the longstanding security cooperation.
Carter thanked the Prime Minister for his support for the campaign against the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or IS), according to an official readout of the meeting. Australia has contributed aircraft to battle ISIL, as well as military training personnel in Iraq. Carter added that he "looks forward to Australia's participation in this Wednesday's counter-IS coalition meeting in Paris," the statement affirmed. Turnbull is scheduled to meet with President Barack Obama at the White House on Tuesday. (end) ys.gb
